Marriage License Requirements
Marriage licenses issued in North Carolina may be used in any county in North Carolina. Original licenses must be returned to the county of issuance.

Premarital physicals are not required. NC residency is not required.

Applicants may type and submit their marriage application online at: However, both bride and groom must appear in person to complete the application process.

Fee for license is $50. Only cash is accepted.

Social Security Number
Both applicants must provide verification of their social security number. Forms of verification include social security card, W-2 form or a pay stub.

Applicants not eligible for a social security number may complete an affidavit attesting to this fact.

Applicants 21 years of age or older may use:

-Valid Driver’s License
-Valid State issued ID card
-Valid passport
-Valid Military ID
-Certified copy of birth certificate

Applicants 20 years of age or younger must have a certified copy of their birth certificate.

Applicants 16 or 17 years of age must have parental consent.

Applicants 14 or 15 years of age must present a certified court order authorizing the marriage from a District Court Judge.

Applicants may purchase their license between the hours of 8:30am and 4:30pm Mon.-Fri. excluding holidays.

Divorced applicants must provide the month and year of their divorce. Divorced applicants must provide a certified copy of the decree if the divorce was finalized within 30 days of applying for the license.

Marriages may be performed by an ordained minister of any religious denomination, a minister authorized by a church, a magistrate or a federal or state recognized Indian nation or tribe.

Certified copies of a marriage license are available for a $10 fee each. Copies may be obtained through the mail or in person.
